Deconstructing instructions in the art academy

Drawing as a manual discipline was long taught in the West according to specific ‘academic’ principles, culminating institutionally art academies of nineteenth century. This educational process mediated by visual images and three-dimensional objects, relied on copying means acquire skill along with ‘vocabulary’ idealized forms. During twentieth century roles, values practices changed profoundly, consequently methods artistic education well. As symbols tradition overcome, many (modernizing) academies, instruction books, plaster casts sculptures écorchés were either discarded or consigned storage rooms libraries. In one such school, Minerva Art Academy Groningen (the Netherlands), didactic experiment undertaken spring semester 2019. historian Vanessa van ‘t Hoogt artist Henrike Scholten designed an elective course that investigated reflected critically academy’s history. Using historically informed, experimental practice-based pedagogic approach, sixteen-week challenged 23 undergraduate students engage material heritage academy. Not nostalgic neo-academic fashion, but their own terms contemporary students. project report describes some aspects authors’ approach during course. investigative sometimes performative project, it toes line between action research object-based teaching. The aim provide new tools history its processes acquisition reflective generative way.
